What Is This Thing Called Love

Chris Young and Eden Woodruff were two ten year old kids who just began living next door to each other in a small town named Willow Creek in Southern Utah.
It was a beautiful autumn day. The leaves on the trees were just now turning magnificent colors, and the temperature outside was perfect for wearing just a light sweater.
The moment the two children had laid eyes on each other, they were attracted to each other. Eden’s family had just recently completed moving into their new high priced home.
It only took a day or so before Chris and Eden were holding hands and doing practically everything together. The parents of Chris and Eden certainly embraced this friendship.
On Sunday morning, the two kids were getting dressed for church. They would walk to the local Mormon church together. The Mormon Church was only a ten minute stroll from their home.
Chris was wearing a dark colored blue suit and tie, while Eden wore a white knee length skirt and a matching blouse that gave her full coverage. These two kids made an absolutely beautiful couple. Their parents couldn’t have been more happy.
Chris and Eden were so cute together, the President of the Church, seen as a prophet by some in the congregation, made the two kids greeters. Chris and Eden also took on roles such as ushering and helping out in the church nursery.
Eden’s mother, known as a proper Mormon, wanted her daughter, Eden, to one day become known as the perfect Molly Mormon. While keeping herself attractive, Eden’s life would revolve around family and marriage and all the social demands of Mormonism.
This Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints boasted of their openness and connection with the Utah public school system. But, it was all a facade in the Willow Creek community. There was no-such thing as balancing mainstream education with the Mormon religious standards. In fact, the Willow Creek public school system frequently included early morning and afternoon seminary classes. There was surely a strong supportive social circle of loyal Mormons that made them truly appear unbreakable.
At the age of fifteen, shock waves went across the town of Willow Creek. It became known that Eden was pregnant. Her parents were outraged. The blame was immediately placed on Chris. He kept denying the allegations. But, it did no good. During church services, both Chris and Eden had psychological meltdowns. They were both, along with their parents, excommunicated from the church.
But, Chris was not the father of Eden’s unborn child. The biological father was Eden’s Uncle Jacob. He had raped Eden. However, before Eden was excommunicated from the church, she had spouted her Uncle Jacob's name as the father. But , no one was listening.
The next day Chris and Eden made their plans to run away from home. They had stolen upwards of $5,000.00 in cash from their parents' stowed away money boxes. While both Chris and Eden’s fathers were at work, their mothers were occupied with trying to get back in the church as members.
Chris and Eden took advantage of their chance to leave town and called a cab. They left town with two small suitcases in broad daylight. They went all the way to the city of St. George. They paid the cab driver several hundred dollars and went into the Greyhound bus station. They both purchased tickets to Las Vegas, Nevada.
Chris and Eden getting off the bus in Las Vegas immediately got a cab and asked to be taken to a protective place named Child Haven. They told their story to counselors, and were immediately admitted into the Child Haven community.
It seemed kind of coldhearted, but Chris and Eden could only stay at Child Haven for another year. They were nearing the maximum age for the state’s childhood facility.
But they both had succeeded in getting their high school equivalency. They had also worked hard as grocery store clerks, a dish washer, a busser, and a library aide.
But now, the Vegas persona and parenting a newborn was putting a great strain on both Chris and Eden.
Chris was getting suspicious of Eden and other men. She seemed to begin being receptive to men who had good sums of money.
Over time, Chris had seen enough. Especially when he saw Eden’s new tattoos. That week he went out and joined the Air Force. He was set, after boot camp, and advanced training, to become an intelligence analyst.
But, it would be a likely rough road. Chris had asked God in prayer just what is this thing called love? But, he got no answer.
Eden, in time, legally accused Chris of non-support of her child and abandonment of family. Chris was shocked to learn Eden was once again pregnant. Again, she claimed Chris was also this biological father. But, he wasn’t. Once again, Chris could not prove that he wasn’t the baby’s father.
Several months later, Chris, now labeled a dead beat dad by the legal system, appeared in court. He was ordered to pay Eden three-quarters of his monthly salary from the Air Force. He told the judge to go to hell. The bailiffs took custody of Chris and secured him in a holding cell.
Later on in the day the presiding judge came down to see Chris. Again, Chris refused to pay, citing that neither one of Eden’s children was his, biologically. The judge once again threatened Chris. The judge was shocked when Chris spit in his face.
Chris spent the next several months in solitary confinement. He was also dishonorably discharged from the Air Force.
Once released from jail, Chris was homeless in Las Vegas. He only lasted a week before another violent homeless man stabbed him in the chest seventeen times. Chris died in the homeless encampment. He laid there dead for nearly two weeks before anyone in authority picked up his body.
Eden became pregnant once again. But, this time the father was a known black pimp. It was most likely good for her that both Eden and the fetus died during childbirth.
Eden’s two children were placed in the custody of the State of Nevada. The State of Utah and the grandparents of Eden's children wanted nothing to do with them.
No one was at either Chris’ or Eden’s funeral. It was a paupers service. Their burial site were ironically right next to each other where they would spend an eternity.
The only person to ever visit Chris' or Eden's grave was Uncle Jacob. But, his involvement with Eden would always be a well kept secret. He only came to their gravesite, once, to apologize for his wrongdoings that led to the destruction of their lives.
